Democrats finally choose Obama
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid have all but confirmed that the race to select the next President of the United States will be all over by next Wednesday. Any undecided super delegates will be pressed to make a final decision once Tuesday’s primaries are over. There will be a large Barack Wins Nomination banner leading most newspapers next Wednesday morning.
When asked if the general election will begin after next Tuesday, Obama replied “Yes”.
Mr. Reid and Mrs. Pelosi spoke on Thursday and agreed that they cannot have this race extend much longer, they need to start focusing on McCain. Of course Pelosi and Reid have no formal authority to mandate a result but they both have something more powerful, clout. A final remark from Majority Leader Reid - “simple math” indicated that by next Tuesday Mr. Obama would have the necessary number of delegates to prevail.
This whole process is a huge drain on the party. It wastes resources, burns a ton of cash, creates in-fighting and turmoil. The US might want to take a peak at the Canadian system where party leaders are chosen by the party after a few days of wheeling and dealing. Then again who wants a system that manages to have Stephane Dion the leader of anything. The point is that this is a very draining (both morally and financialy) system that could use an overhaul.
